1. What is a Murder Mystery Game?

A murder mystery game is an interactive, immersive social experience where each guest plays a distinct character, receives private information, shares theories, and works together (or against each other) to solve a fictional murder. You’ll gather clues, question fellow players, and try to avoid being falsely accused. But be careful, one of you is the murderer. The goal: identify the killer before you are eliminated from the game.

3. How do I buy a game from Mystery Enterprises?

Buying a game is easy:

  1. Browse the available games on our homepage and review the game synopsis, number of characters and preview video.
  2. Choose the version you want (Standard or Expanded) based on your guest count.
  3. Add to cart and complete checkout—once payment is processed you’ll receive immediate access to your game.
  4. Log in, assign characters to your guests, click the button for the system to send out your invitations to your guests, and wait for the date of your murder mystery event.

4. Do you offer any discounts on your murder mystery games?

Yes — we appreciate returning players! After you complete your first game, you automatically become eligible for a 10% discount on all future game purchases. The discount is applied at checkout when our site recognizes you as a returning player. The 10% discount applies to all returning players, even if you weren’t the purchaser of the previously played game.  This is our way of saying “thanks” for being part of our mystery-loving community. Note that we do not publish hidden promo codes.

5. How many players are required for a Murder Mystery Game?

Each game is built around a specific number of characters. For example, one game might have 5 characters, another might have 10. You will need exactly one player per character.
If your guest count changes slightly and expect more guests than characters, two people can share one character (playing “together”).
Check the following game detail pages for the exact player-count specification of that title (Standard or Expanded version).

6. What happens if my guest count changes or someone cancels at the last minute?

The game is designed for one person to play one game character. Confirmed guests should be informed that their attendance is critical to the game. Despite this warning, we know guest counts can fluctuate — here’s how we handle it:

  • If you lose exactly one player, we set up a contingency plan for the expanded versions of the games.  Thus, the expanded versions of Hollywood Homicide, A Killer Technology, and Murder in the Court allow you to select an option to still play the game with one less player.
  • If you add another guest and you now have more guests than the number of characters, then simply have two players play one character together.

7. Can the host be a player in the game?

Yes — the host may absolutely play. Our games feature a game narrator that guides players throughout the game, so even if you host and play, you will not receive any “spoiler” information ahead of time.  In the game set up phase before the date of the event, the purchaser uses a very user-friendly interface to assign players to specific characters.  As the purchaser and host, simply assign yourself as one of the characters, send the electronic invites accordingly, and join the fun.
There is a minimal amount of prep time before the murder mystery night. Our user-friendly platform provides the purchaser clear instructions to set up the main video screen (if meeting in-person), practicing using web conference software to share screen with sound and utilize breakout rooms.

8. Does the murderer change if you re-play the game?

No — the murderer, victim and story are fixed for each game. That means the same exact group should not play again if you want a fresh experience.
If you’d like to replay with a new group, we recommend purchasing a different title (or invite a completely new set of players). This keeps the suspense genuine for first-time players.

9. Do I need any special equipment or materials to play?

Most of our games last between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on group size and how quickly players solve the mystery. Warning: be ready to have your guests continue discussing and reliving the game after it officially ends.

10. How long does a Murder Mystery Game last?

Our Murder Mystery Games are generally recommended for ages 14 and above, as they can include mature themes or intricate plots. Please note that none of our games contain foul language or explicit sexual language.

11. Is there an age restriction to participate in the game?

Our games are generally recommended for ages 13 and up, as many plots involve mature themes or complex reasoning.
While none of our games contain explicit foul language or sexual content, younger children may find the clues challenging or the elimination process disappointing. If you’d like to include younger players, consider pairing them with an adult.

12. Can I host a murder mystery game virtually through web-conference software, and if so, what do I need?

Yes — you can absolutely host one of our games virtually. Here’s how it works and what each player will need:

  • A device (laptop tablet, or smart phone) to access the web-conference platform (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, etc.) with video and audio for all players. Be sure you are familiar with sharing your screen and utilizing breakout rooms on the selected platform. We recommend Zoom only if you have access to a Pro account.  Otherwise, you will be timed out after 40 minutes.
  • A smartphone (this is in addition to the device that accesses the web conference) and internet connection.

After the purchaser has bought the game and assigned all players to characters, players will receive electronic invitations that will allow them to login to the game. For more information about playing our murder mystery games virtually, check out our blog Murder Mystery Games Online: How to Play on Zoom.

13. What happens when an innocent character gets voted out of the game?

When an innocent character receives the most votes during a voting round (unless they correctly vote for the murderer), they are eliminated from active play. Also, if an innocent player incorrectly votes for another innocent character in three rounds, they will be eliminated.
But the fun doesn’t stop for them: eliminated players can continue participating in a “spectator” role — quietly observe meetings, review clues together with other eliminated players, and still watch the drama unfold. This ensures engagement for all players throughout.

14. How long do I have access to the back office after I purchase a game?

You will gain access to the game immediately after purchasing it. Two months after your purchase date, your game access will expire, so we recommend hosting your game within that timeframe.

15. How will I know whether I will like playing the murder mystery game?

Not sure yet if you’ll love it? Here are a few ways to decide:

  • Read game synopses and watch the video trailers for each title on the links below, so you get a feel for theme, tone and number of characters.
  • Browse testimonials and customer photos showing past parties and reactions.
  • Try one of our free mini-mysteries available on the site — this gives you a taste of the gameplay style, clues and pacing.
  • Take our free detective quiz to find out what type of detective you are and get a specific game recommendation for your group.
